Rural and Small Libraries vs. Small Salaries

Carol Barta, North Central Kansas Library System moderated a panel discussion at ALA in June as chair of the the ALA Committee on Rural, Native and Tribal Libraries of All Kinds. To prepare for the program titled, "Rural and Small Libraries vs. Small Salaries", ALA-APA and OLOS* conducted the Rural Libraries Salary Survey to find out what rural librarians thought about their salaries.

So how did respondents from across the nation feel about their salaries? "...pay inequity, low professional status, lack of qualified staff, high employee turnover and a concern about the effects of the new minimum wage on rural economies", according to a press release from OLOS.

Hope for better salaries and status for rural librarians might be found in 2 ALA offerings:
The Better Salaries and Pay Equity Toolkit (ALA-APA, 2007), and
The Small but Powerful Guide to Winning Big Support for Your Rural Library (OLOS, 2007)

Read the survey report for more interesting results and then check out these toolkits to start working on your plan to increase your salary!

ALA-APA = ALA Allied Professional Association
